Many thanks to guest speakers, Barb Gilley and Rob Harvey. A huge thanks to Brain Lyall for, once again, organizing and hosting this annual event on behalf of the Barrhaven Scottish. Next year our aim will be to try and double the size of this annual social.

I am looking forward to getting reacquainted with all the Club members at these functions. This is going to be a very challenging year for the Scottish with both the Men and Women competing in the Super League. I am looking forward to taking the step up to prove that the Club is ready to meet and exceed this challenge.

The new executive members are: Kathleen De Jesus-Gauthier (Secretary), Gary Thomas (VP Planning), Mike Parker (VP Junior), Chelsea Heuff (VP Women), and Rob Stanfield (Registrar).  They join returning executives Bryce Cooper (VP Finance) and Danny O’Shea (VP Men), while Gord Tennant moves from VP Planning to President.  Best of luck for the new executive as they plan what promises to be an exciting 2012 season!

Of course, the club would not be in a position to excel were it not for the time and effort put in by the departing executive members.  Past president Brian Lyall has accepted a position as coach and high performance director of the Eastern Ontario rugby sevens program.  Rachel Abraham and Ashley Reid, who served as VP Women and Secretary respectively, have helped build our women’s program into the success it has become and will focus on playing next season.  Steve Crane will also focus on helping the men’s teams build on last year and will pursue his doctorate in geophysics.  Colin Langille has toiled manfully as registrar for the past three years and will use his extra time to make a long-awaited return to the pitch in 2012.  Thank you to all departing executive members!

The AGM is an important part of the administration of the club, and helps determine the direction the club will take over the following year.  It also provides an opportunity for the Club Executive to report on its activities over the past year.  All members of the club are strongly encouraged to attend.

The AGM is also where elections are held for vacant positions on the Executive.  This year, the following positions are open: President, Secretary, VP Planning, VP Women, VP Juniors.

For all motions or elections at the AGM, playing members and associate members in good standing have one vote.  A person shall be considered an associate member of the club should they be sponsored by a playing member in good standing.  Parents of children playing in the club are associate members by virtue of the parental relationship with the playing member.

In summary, the AGM is an important opportunity to help decide the activities and policies of your club.  It is strongly recommended that all players attend.  Should you have any questions about the AGM or your eligibility to vote, please send an e-mail to any member of the executive, as detailed in the Contact section of this website.

The Banquet is the annual event that marks the end of the season and sees the presentation of awards to senior players and administrators.  Tickets are $45.

For everyone else, training this Thursday will be held up and down the stairs at the Supreme Courthouse on Wellington.  If you’re not sure where it is, Google it.  We will meet at the front of the courthouse.  Please bring running shoes (no cleats), the warm-up shirt you were given Tuesday (if you haven’t received one yet, it will be there for you), and clothes that you are comfortable running in.  It is suggested that you bring your own water bottle as well.  A post-training social will be held on Sparks street at the chicken and rib fest.

Please make an effort to attend. Feel free to bring refreshments, a cooler, some food, etc. I will make sure there is charcoal for the barbecues. I will make an effort to make sure some food is available but if everyone could bring something then it will make this a lot easier and make sure that we have lots for everyone. Also, if anyone has a cooler it would be a great idea to fill it with ice and bring it.

At noon, the second’s team was the first to hit the field against the Ottawa Indians. The strong second’s line up didn’t waste much time as they worked hard in the first 5 minutes of the game to score the first try of the game. The sun and heat did not hold the women back as they worked hard at the break downs and then as a unit in open play. The chemistry and determination of the team showed as they ended the game with a 47 – 5 win over the Indians. Contributors to the scoring action include Alexis Groulx (3), Stephanie Tibelius, Crystal Kruithof, Heather Boersma, and Natalie Poirier. Steph Tibelius also contributed 3 points for a penalty kick and 3 more converts and Jessica Harvey booted 1 convert as well.

After cheering on the seconds, the first team kicked it into high gear as they kicked off the game against Beaconsfield. The women worked hard rucking and scrumming, leaving it all on the field. The strong 1^st team line up really started to show their crisp running lines and strong decision-making going into the half. The second half was no different as the women added to their already significant lead over Beaconsfield. The game ended in an 84-0  victory for the Scottish! Scorers include Asya Bartley (5), Jessica Harvey (4), Stephanie Tibelius (2), Alexis Groulx, Ashley Reid, and Ellie Hunter. Converts came from Stephanie Tibelius (3), Erin Clement (3) and Jessica Harvey.

The women have the weekend off this upcoming week but strongly encourage your attendance at the 2^nd annual boat cruise this Saturday night. See Lindsay Ouellette or Chelsea Heuff for tickets!

The women’s second’s team kicked off the games for club day as they faced off against the Coven. The 12pm start saw a great crowd in the stands as members of every department in the club came to watch the matches! The 2^nd’s team worked hard the first half of the game and dominated the Coven, ending the half with a 29-8 lead. The second half saw hotter weather, which affected both sides. After great battling from both sides, the 2^nd’s team came out on top winning the match 49-39.  Try scorers for the match include Natalie Snell, Asya Bartley, Tegan Bradshaw (2), Erin Clement (2), Shannon Walsh Moreau, Lindsay Leclair, and Laura Zandwyk, along with 2 converts from the boot of Erin Clement.

As the Scottish second’s battled on the SNP pitch, the 1^st team kicked off their match versus the Montreal Barbarians at Longfields High School at 1:00 pm. The women worked hard to win every breakdown, out rucking and mauling the opposition. At the half, the women had a good lead over the Barbs but did not let off. The second half saw more battling from the Scottish ladies as they left it all out on the pitch. The game ended in the 34-5 victory for the Scottish – a well deserved win! Try scorers included Alexis Groulx, Jessica Harvey (2), Natalie Poirier, Megan Copeland Dinan, and Asya Bartley. Stephanie Tibelius also converted two kicks.

The women would like to thank everyone who made the Scottish Club Day a success! It was great fun had by all, leaving everyone with good memories and smiles all around! A special shout out to Gord Tennant for all his work behind the scenes for this event!

See you all next week at SNP as the women have a double header with the 2^nd’s playing at 12pm versus the Ottawa Indians and the 1^st team playing at 1:30pm versus Laval!

Cost is $260 for any of junior teams including a U18 womens, and U18, U16 and U14 mens teams.

U18 teams are training on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:00pm, and the U16 and U14 teams are training on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:45-7:15pm. All training is at South Nepean Park.
