Wandering to Montreal (Senior Men)
One weekend prior to the civic holiday bye saw the Senior Men’s team travel to la belle province to challenge the Montreal Wanderers in a highly anticipated rematch.
The Scottish 2nd team took the pitch and with the help of a couple Old Boy’s were able to secure a last minute victory. Alex Hajjar scored the go ahead try with seconds remaining to clinch a 19-12 victory. The other two tries were scored by Phil “Salad” Malfara and Aidan Brown, who had a strong game starting at the wing position. Once again thank you to, Einar Murchison, Chris Kinsella, Michael Griffith and Ben Williams for stepping up and helping collect a hard earned victory.
The Scottish 1st team were inspired by the clutch 2nd team victory and used that momentum to get out to an early lead versus the Wanderers. They weren’t able to hold onto the victory as Montreal was able to secure a couple late penalty kicks to fend off the Scottish for a 26-20 win. Adam Radmore scored one of the tries with the other being awarded after Sydney Stokes took an illegal high tackle by the last man on defence. This resulted in a penalty try. Brian Hue also had a strong kicking game securing two converts and two penalty kicks.
This upcoming weekend as mentioned is a bye week for the Senior Men’s team but they are looking forward to taking on TMR on August 8th in the final away game of the regular season.
To Hull and Back Again (Junior Women)
The latest chapter in the continuing story of the Barrhaven Scottish junior Women’s 2015 season was indelibly scripted on Wednesday July 22nd in our 3rd match of the season against the Hull/Chelsea Gladiateurs in Gatineau.
The Barrhaven side was undermanned for this contest, arriving in Gatineau with only 14 players. But what the junior Women gave up in roster numbers, they more than made up for in intensity and pace around the pitch.
A practice session on managing the breakdown area from guest coach Dan Gauthier the previous evening paid huge dividends in this game. In the opening minutes, it looked like Les Gladiateurs would put up the stiffest challenge yet, but the visiting team’s commitment to tackling, ball possession and defense quickly stifled the opposition and forced them onto the back foot.
The Scottish then wasted no time in driving into the opposition 22 metre zone, capitalizing on some great offloads to send lock Olivia McMurtry into the try zone for the first two tries of the game for the Scottish. Tries from number 8 Maureen Forin, hooker Emily Kyte, lock Tori Wyman and prop Cassidy Klepsch soon followed, staking the Scottish to a 43-5 half time lead.
The 2nd half was a more balanced affair, with both teams moving the ball well and striking with probing runs. The fine open-field defense from both sides resulted in the teams trading a single try a piece, most notably a 3rd try in the game for hooker and player of the match recipient Emily “Dozer” Kyte. Her determined and aggressive running was something to behold, as she ran around, over and through the opposition all game long. At the final whistle, the Scottish junior Women remain undefeated in league play with a 48 – 10 victory. Congrats from the coach to the 14 brave and dedicated souls for a job well done!
Sun, Suds & Scrums (Old Boys)
OTTAWA, July 27, 2015 /BSRFC/ – The Barrhaven Scottish Rugby Football Club is pleased to announce the release of their rugby film: Sun, Suds & Scrums: The Barrhaven Scottish Old Boys in the Bahamas.
In the spring of 2015, Ottawa’s Barrhaven Scottish Old Boys Rugby Club traveled to The Bahamas for the second year of the club’s three-year program of extending sporting, cultural and trade relations between the Ottawa rugby community and the people of The Bahamas.
The short film celebrates the deep bonds of friendship between players – some of whom are in their 60’s, yet who continue to play the game as if they were decades younger.
“Sun, Suds and Scrums celebrates Rugby’s unique culture of acceptance and universal brotherhood,” said film writer and narrator Phil Selig. Shot in documentary format, the film shares the on and off field exploits of the travelers from Ottawa. The film also pays homage to Sir Jack Hayward, a founder of the Freeport Rugby Club and a legendary figure in The Bahamas and the sporting community at large in England,
“Rugby has been part of my life for over 50 years. I have traveled and played rugby all around the world,” said Ottawa’s Greg Thaggard of the Scottish Old Boys, “and I’m glad that I have kept playing long enough to experience all that the Bahamas has to offer.”
