Saturday, September 12th 2015 saw a gathering of over 200 passionate members of the Ottawa community converging on Ken Ross park to show their support for Rowan’s Law.
Despite consistent downpours the vision, drive and emotion couldn’t be washed away.
May 2013 was perhaps the darkest period for the Scottish, Barrhaven and the sporting communities as we lost an incredible young spirit in Rowan Stringer who succumbed to complications from concussions incurred while playing high school rugby. No parent should ever have to go through this incredible loss, especially not incredible people like Gordon and Kathleen Stringer. An inquest was launched into this terrible tragedy and one of the major findings/conclusions was that a Law should be passed which will aim to provide the resources, education and support for players, coaches, trainers and all those involved in sport to recognize and deal with concussions.
Rowan’s parents Gordon and Kathleen have been at the forefront of this initiative and have found allies in a quickly organized committee consisting of (but not limited to) Conservative M.P.P Lisa Macleod, Ottawa Councillors Jody Mitic and Barrhaven’s own Jan Harder, The Barrhaven Scottish Rugby Football Club, community organizer Darrell Bartraw as well as many local businesses (The Parlour Pizza Kitchen & Bar, Ross’s Your Independent Grocer)
This group quickly organized an event to garner signatures to prove the will was there to have this bill passed. Timing was incredibly important as Monday, September 14th marks the opening of the Ontario Legislative Fall assembly, and a private members bill such as this could very easily be swept under the rug. Lisa Macleod in her diligence has gotten each of the political parties on board and this important initiative will transcend any political partisanship.
Special thanks to local Ottawa media who each provided a platform to spread this message and covered this terrific event.
