OTTAWA, June 10th,2016/BSRFC/-
It is with heavy hearts and tear soaked eyes that Ottawa’s Barrhaven Scottish announce the passing of Ian “Eck; Papa Smurf” Eckersley at the age of 59.
Eckersley originally from Australian joined the club in the 1980’s and contributed to the club in every manner imaginable from player to coach to president to chaperone for wayward rugby players.
Ian had more recently re-engaged with the club and joined the Old Boys in Freeport in 2015 returning to the pitch for the first time in over 15 years. A broken leg in that game didn’t dampen his spirits or put out the fire, as he accompanied the Old Boys again in 2016 and even made his way back onto the pitch.
2016 saw Ian’s company “Bin There Dump That” come on board as Key sponsor of the Scottish and this past Saturday he was able to watch the Men’s 1st team wear their new kit with his logo on the front for the first time. Ian and Bin There were also instrumental in the drive for donations for the Barrhaven FoodCupboard during the “Rowan’s Pitch” Naming ceremony on Saturday, June 7th 2016 delivering large bin which was filled with food and supplies for those in need in the Barrhaven community.
G’day, God Bless and Rest in Peace mate.
